ウェイン・ショーター
ウェイン・ショーターをオーチャードホールに聴きに行った。
現在80歳。
ウェイン・ショーターというのはジャズの世界ではとても有名な人で、過去に大物ミュージシャンとの幾多の素晴らしい演奏を残している。
数年前に聴いた時は体調が思わしくなかったのか、だいぶ衰えたように見えたが、今回は凄かった。
信じられないような集中力とパワーを見せてくれ、さらに緻密でかつ自由で新しい、あの独特なウェイン・ショーターの世界を満喫させてくれた。
ずいぶん前に経営者の間でサミュエル・ウルマンの「青春（Youth）」という詩がブームになったことがあるが、まさにそれを地でいく今回の演奏だった。

Youth is not a time of life -it is a state of mind ; it is a temper of the will, a quality of a imagination, a vigor of the emotions, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over love of ease.
Nobody grows old only by deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul
Worry, doubt, self-distrust, fear, and despair ― there are the long, long, years that bow the head and turn the growing spirit back to dust.
Whether seventy or sixteen, there is in every being’s heart the love of wonder, the sweet amazement at the stars and the starlike things and thoughts, the undouted challenge of events, the unfailing childlike appetite for what next, and the joy and the game of life.
You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear, as young as your hope, as old as your despair.
So long as your heart receives messages of beauty, cheer, courage, grandeur, and power from the earth, from man and from the Infinit, so long you are young.
When the writer are all down and all the central place of your heart is covered with the snows of pessimism and the ice of cyncism, then you are grown old indeed and may God have mercy on your soul.

「青春」 サミュエル・ウルマン
青春とは人生のある期間を言うのではなく、心の様相を言うのだ。
優れた創造力、逞しき意志、炎ゆる情熱、怯懦を却ける勇猛心、安易を振り捨てる冒険心、こう言う様相を青春と言うのだ。
年を重ねただけで人は老いない。理想を失うときに初めて老いが来る。歳月は皮膚のしわを増すが、情熱を失う時に精神はしぼむ。
苦悶や狐疑や、不安、恐怖、失望、こう言うものこそ恰も長年月の如く人を老いさせ、精気ある魂をも芥に帰せしめてしまう。
年は七十であろうと十六であろうと、その胸中に抱き得るものは何か。
曰く、驚異への愛慕心、空にきらめく星辰、その輝きにも似たる事物や思想に対する欽仰、事に処する剛毅な挑戦、小児の如く求めて止まぬ探求心、人生への歓喜と興味。
人は信念と共に若く 疑惑と共に老ゆる、
人は自信と共に若く 恐怖と共に老ゆる、
希望ある限り若く 失望と共に老い朽ちる。
大地より、神より、人より、美と喜悦、勇気と壮大、そして偉力の霊感を受ける限り、人の若さは失われない。 これらの霊感が絶え、悲嘆の白雪が人の心の奥までも蔽いつくし、皮肉の厚氷がこれを堅くとざすに至れば、この時にこそ人は全く老いて、神の憐れみを乞うる他はなくなる。
以上がサミュエル・ウルマンの「青春」で、とても真理をついている。
少し大仰ではあるがウェイン・ショーターを観てこれを思い出した。
経営者にも、たまに歳を聞いてびっくりするような若々しい人がいるが、恐らくこういうことなのだろう。
どこの世界にも凄いのがいると改めて感じたコンサートだった。
